Pino Di Gennaro Biography
Pino Di Gennaro, born Troia (Foggia) in 1951, graduated in sculpture at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts where he currently teaches. The intense activity dedicated to didactics and the teaching of sculpture is expressed in the drafting of the school text "The ways of sculpture", for Hoepli editions. In exalting the expressiveness of the single material, Pino Di Gennaro combines poor materials with noble ones: papier-mâché and steel; wax and bronze; papier-mâché and lead. He prefers bronze for outdoor works, using the lost wax casting technique, expressed in its numerous expressive possibilities; enhances the color of the material if treated with acids and pigments; with mirror polishing it enhances its brightness and preciousness. The color of the papier-mâché, the brightness of the bronze, the transparency of the wax and the opacity of the lead are not seen here as qualities of the individual materials, but rather as expressive possibilities of the material, to create the fascinating dialectic between fragile matter and hard matter , poor and rich. The artistic poetics of the sculptor is aimed at the social function of sculpture in urban spaces as a possibility of contributing to improving the aesthetic quality of places, the identity and quality of life of the inhabitants by enhancing the sculpture-architecture relationship, in encouraging moments of interaction between the space, the work of art and its user. His works are present in numerous public spaces: three large fountain-sculptures “Monument to Peace” in Piazza di S. Secondino, Municipality of Troia, 1997; Bruzzano Monumental Cemetery, Family Tomb Ancient sculpture “Quelli che vai”, 1998; “Tactile sculpture” for the blind installed in the historic center of Gallarate commissioned by the Gallarate Seprio Lions Club, 2004; New Municipal Library of the Municipality of Somma Lombardo sculpture “Memories of rediscovered signs”, 2004; Sculpture for the blind "Alghero a city to touch" installed in the historic center of Alghero commissioned by the Alghero Lions Club, 2005.
