Guido Falzoni Biography

Giulio Falzoni (1900 - 1979) was a painter born in Marmirolo, in the province of Mantua, in 1900. He lived for many years in Florence and later in Milan, his city of choice, of which he painted many views and where he died in 1979. Prominent representative of the figurative school of the twentieth century, he produced himself in various techniques but his name remains mainly linked to his mastery of watercolor, of which he was the undisputed master. He has been awarded several awards: the Ambrogino d'oro in 1977; the Silver Plaque from the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, in 1978; the Golden Lion of the Serenissima Accademia della Signoria of Florence and the nomination as honorary citizen and ambassador of Mantua. His paintings are present in numerous private and public collections: among the latter the prestigious Uffizi Gallery and the Capitoline Museums. In 1915 he began studying drawing in Mantua. Despite his young age, he briefly took part in the First World War, on which occasion he recorded images of life in the trenches in a notebook. A violinist, one of his pictorial peculiarities is due precisely to his musical studies: while as a boy he was walking to his violin lesson from Marmirolo in Mantua, he slipped on the snow and fell between the legs of two draft horses, but the intelligent beasts stopped step immediately so as not to step on it. From that moment Falzoni conceived a sense of gratitude so much so that throughout his pictorial life they entered his paintings, alone or as part of his many views of cities around the world. In 1928 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he began to distinguish himself for his use of the watercolor technique for which he later became known. In the late 1940s he specialized at the Royal Watercolor Society in London. In the 70s of the last century he dedicated himself to some interesting multimedia experiments that combined his two great passions: painting and classical music.
