Ugo Gheduzzi was born in Crespellano, in the province of Bologna, on 5 March 1853.
Trained at the Academy of Bologna, he showed an early interest in painting and decoration, under the aegis of his maternal grandfather Gaetano Lodi from Crevalcore.
At the age of twelve he entered the scenography laboratory of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, and then continued his career in Turin, where he collaborated with Augusto Ferri to create the scenes for the Teatro Regio.
