Raffaele Giannetti Biography

Raffaele Giannetti was born in Porto Maurizio (Imperia) in 1837.
After having attended Liguistics in Genoa, he studied at the Albertina Academy, with Carlo Arienti and in Rome with Francesco Coghetti. In the capital he exhibited "Bernabò Visconti and the messengers of Innocent VI" in 1863, for which he was expelled from the Papal State. In Venice he was appointed art member of the Venetian Academy and received appreciation from artists of the caliber of Francesco Hayez.
He goes to Paris where he hangs out with Thomas Couture and Delaroche. Here he painted “Benvenuto Cellini and Francesco I” which was later purchased by the King of Bavaria.
In 1872 he settled in Venice and won the Querini Foundation competition thanks to the work “Giovanni Barbarigo liberating the queen of Hungary”. In Florence he frequented a group of artists linked to tradition, such as Pelagio Palagi and Antonio Ciseri. Between 1858 and 1880 it was exhibited at the exhibitions of the Genoese Promoter.
Giannetti dealt with the historical, genre and portrait paintings.
Open to the artistic avant-garde, he was influenced by Hayez, the French and English romantics and the Macchiaioli. His works are mainly preserved in foreign galleries.
In 1923 an important retrospective was dedicated to him at Palazzo Rosso in Genoa.
