Gilardi Pier Celestino (1837 - 1905) was a famous painter from Turin, coming from a family of skilled wood sculptors. Thanks to his training received in Varallo under the guidance of Frigiolini and family tradition, he first developed a passion for sculpture and carving in wood and ivory, creating religious and genre works.
In 1860, he had the opportunity to attend the Accademia Albertina in Turin with Andrea Gastaldi as teacher, after winning a scholarship.
In 1870 he won the chair of drawing and plastics in the professional schools of Biella.
In 1873, Gastaldi called him to teach at the Albertina Academy, becoming professor of drawing three years later and, in 1889, succeeding Gastaldi himself in the chair of painting.
He began his career with historical subjects, such as "The Death of Andrea del Sarto" in 1863, "Brutus awaits the hour of the conspiracy" in 1864 and "Machiavelli in prison".
