Francesco Gioli Biography

Francesco Gioli was born on 29 June 1846 in San Frediano a Settimo, in the hamlet of Cascina, located in the province of Pisa. Coming from a wealthy family, he began studying at the Academy of Pisa and subsequently attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. In 1868, in Florence, Gioli achieved great success, as his canvases met the prevailing taste of the time, oriented towards historical genre painting of late Romantic origin.
The artist then began to explore other avenues of research, seeking new inspiration from the observation and passionate study of nature and abandoning the traditional academic method to deal with the stylistic schemes of the Macchiaiolo movement. The visit to Paris broadened his curiosities and interest. From this experience came the indications to devote himself exclusively to landscape subjects and scenes of rural life, which he translated with considerable attention to chromatic and luminous relationships. In 1888, Francesco Gioli was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, and the following year the same role was assigned to him at that of Florence.
Francesco Gioli died in Florence on 4 February 1922.
