Domenico Gnoli Biography

Domenico Gnoli (Rome, 3 May 1933 – New York, 17 April 1970) was an Italian painter, illustrator and set designer.

He began designing his first sets at a very young age (1949-52). He attended the private school of painting and engraving with his mother in CA Petrucci, director of Roman state engravings. In 1951 he participated in the exhibition "Art graphique italien contemporain" at the Giroux Gallery in Brussels (17 March-3 April); he is the youngest artist included and Petrucci (1951) praises him. His qualities are improviser, "rich imagination" and "amazing memory"; the biography in the catalog defines her as mainly oriented towards illustration. In August of the same year he exhibited drypoint and etchings at the II Italian Press Exhibition in Sassari.

In 1952 he attended a regular course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, but was soon dropped out. After some experiences as an actor, he began working as a theater set designer, first in the Vivi Gioi company and then in that of C. Baseggio: for the latter he designed sets and costumes for some shows, including The Merchant of Venice Festival Shakespeare, June 1953 at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich, performed by C. Gozzi. In the autumn of 1955 he made his first trip to New York for the exhibition "Contemporary Italian Painters", inaugurated on October 4 at the Sagittarius Gallery, where he exhibited fantastic paintings that still have theatrical inspiration. The following year he held a personal exhibition of drawings and paintings in the same gallery.
