Giovanfrancesco Gonzaga Biography

Giovan Francesco Gonzaga was born in Milan in 1921. Although his parents wanted him to become a lawyer, Giovan Francesco had a passion for art since he was a child. However, he was forbidden to enroll at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. At the age of twenty he joined the Savoy Cavalry as a volunteer for the Russian Campaign. The experience of war left an indelible mark on Giovan Francesco, but it also fueled his passion for horses. After the war he finally dedicated himself to painting and in 1947 he held his first solo exhibition at the Carini Gallery in Milan.

In 1955 he began traveling and his greatest artistic and personal growth occurred in Spain. His recurring themes were still lifes, portraits and horses, which were his favorites. Giovan Francesco received numerous awards, including the Premio Marzotto in 1963, the Pavone d'Oro in 1967 and the Grolla d'Oro in 1972. In 2001 he was awarded the Abrogino d'Oro, the highest award given by the city of Milan to its illustrious citizens. .

Today his works are exhibited in several national and international museums, such as the Tel Aviv Museum, the Art Museum of Los Angeles, and private and public collections in Italy, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Indonesia, China, Japan, Singapore, and the United States. Giovan Francesco Gonzaga died in Milan on 2 October 2007.
