Peter Graham Scott Biography
Peter Graham Scott was born in East Sheen, Surrey, in 1923. After spending his childhood in Isleworth, Middlesex, he attended acting courses at the Italia Conti Academy. In his teens, he joined the film division of the British Ministry of Information, working as an assistant editor.
With the outbreak of World War II, Scott was called up for military service. However, his service was abruptly ended by an accident during training. Once recovered, he returned to films and in 1947 worked as an editor on Brighton Rock, starring Richard Attenborough.
In subsequent years, Scott worked primarily as a producer and director of television programs. In 1984 he won the Royal Television Society's Sir Ambrose Fleming Award for outstanding contribution to television. In 1999 he published his memoirs, British Television: An Insider's History.
Scott was one of the producers and directors who shaped British television drama in its formative years. His background in film editing and directing helped move television out of an era of studio-bound production and toward programming that owed more to the cinema than the stage.
Peter Graham Scott died in Windlesham, Surrey, on 5 August 2007.
