Ottavio Grolla Biography

A student of the Institute of Fine Arts in Vercelli, he completed his art education by attending the Brera Academy in Milan (1901-1905; Bozzi Caimi Prize 1905), where he followed the lessons of Vespasiano Bignami and Cesare Tallone. The rapid career of which he is the protagonist sees him among the teachers added to the Braidense schools from 1906 and in 1912 winner of the Mylius academic competition for "good fresco painting"; at the same time he stands out in the Brera exhibitions with a production oriented towards the landscape and the figure according to the methods of Ambrogio Alciati, in which portraits, lake and mountain views and panoramas of the Ligurian Riviera predominate. In 1920 with Sulla Costa Azzurra he won the Fumagalli Prize again at a Brera exhibition; two years later he participated with forty works (an entire room) in the great exhibition set up in Vercelli in honor of the city's artists. The "bright future" envisaged on that occasion by the curator seems to begin to materialize shortly after with the creation of two decorative panels for the hall of the Cassa di Risparmio di Milano (La Beneficenza and Il Risparmio), but in 1923 the artist drowns in the waters of Lake Lecco due to the capsizing of the boat on which he was making an excursion.
