Mary Harron Biography

Mary Harron (1953 - ) A former reporter of the punk-rock scene whose entry into the world of cinema came through British television documentaries, Mary Harron made the leap to feature film with the highly anticipated "I Shot Andy Warhol" (1996), the story of Valerie Solanas, who shot and wounded the art world legend in 1968. A Canadian who grew up in London where she studied literature at Oxford, Harron moved to New York in 1976 to work for an alternative film company. He began writing for Legs McNeil's PUNK magazine and in 1977 wrote a long piece for VILLAGE VOICE that explained and explored the London punk scene, introducing what had been a somewhat underground movement into the American mainstream. Seemingly a constant presence on the cutting edge of pop culture throughout his career, Harron, who participated in and observed the Studio 54 era, the last chapter of the sexual revolution before drugs fell out of favor and AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases led to more cautious behavior, she became fascinated by Warhol's "Factory" scene from the late 1960s that had so intrigued her as a teenager. Later in his career, he will become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 2016 after the great successes of his films American Psycho (2000), The Notorious Bettie Page (2005) and Alias Grace (2017).
