Domenico Induno (Milan, 14 May 1815 – Milan, 5 November 1878) was an Italian painter. In 1854 Domenico obtained the nomination of "Art Associate" of the Brera Academy and in the same year he exhibited, together with other paintings, Pane e lagrime, purchased by Hayez and presented the following year in Paris, where it was particularly appreciated. He reached the pinnacle of his career with the canvas At the Fall of the Leaves, exhibited in 1859, together with other domestic subjects, where he presents female figures intent on carrying out daily chores. In 1860 he began working on the Villafranca Bulletin, a work which he executed in several versions; one of these, commissioned by Vittorio Emanuele II, earned him the title of Knight of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. Having become an academic advisor in 1863, he no longer took part in the annual exhibitions at Brera. In this period he painted School of Seamstresses, Monte di Pieta and Laying the Foundation Stone of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele (1867), a rare work of public commission, which the painter reworked in several versions. At the Vienna exhibition in 1873 he obtained the gold medal for the canvas A domestic drama, a work in which he denounced aspects of post-unification society that he felt were distant from his ideals. Struck by a serious eye disease, he took part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878, obtaining the Legion of Honour. He died in Milan on 5 November of that same year and was buried in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan.
