Norman Jewison Biography

Norman Jewison (1926 - ) is the Oscar-nominated director who tackled a number of controversial topics and social issues in his work, creating mainstream entertainment with a political point of view. Born in 1926 in Toronto, Jewison worked in television before turning to directing with a series of light farces, including the Doris Day vehicles “The Thrill of It All” (1963) and “Send Me No Flowers” (1964) , his latest collaboration with Rock Hudson. His career took a turn with his first drama, "The Cincinnati Kid" (1965). His next film, the dark comedy “The Russians Are Coming! The Russians are coming!” (1966), earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Picture. He won an Oscar the following year for "In the Heat of the Night" (1967), a mystery about a black detective (Sidney Poitier) and a white sheriff (Rod Steiger) investigating a murder in the Deep South. Jewison has infused issues of racial tension and civil rights into the plot, creating a contemporary and socially conscious thriller. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and brought the director his first Best Director nomination. Jewison competed five more times at the Oscars with "Fiddler on the Roof" (1971), "Moonstruck" (1987) and "A Soldier's Story" (1984). Although it never won, it received the Irving G. Thalberg Award for producing in 1999.
