Chantal Joffe is a painter born in 1969 in St. Albans, Vermont. He currently lives and works in London. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and in 1994 obtained his Master's Degree from the Royal College of Art in London.
His art is considered "Bad painting", i.e. a transgressive pictorial movement, which aims to represent voluntary deformity and unaesthetics. It is a different form of realism that does not have to do with protests or protests, but seeks an intimate state in which the subjects portrayed become protagonists, full of fear and the desire to look inside themselves.
Chantal Joffe is dedicated to creating portraits painted with fluidity and fluency, in which she captures the emotions, weaknesses and vitality of human existence. His subjects are often women and girls, represented in different periods of life. These subjects move between innocence and sensuality, purity and irony. With mature and confident brushstrokes, Chantal Joffe uses a palette of soft colors and strong hues. The painter portrays human emotions by creating a certain detachment between the figure and the viewer, who may feel modesty when observing the portraits, as if he were violating an area of intimacy. He has exhibited his works in New York, London, Seoul, Milan, Venice and Paris. His work is in the collections of the Royal College of Art, the National Portrait Gallery, London, the Saatchi Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston.
