Antonio Joli Biography

Antonio Joli, born in Modena in 1700 and died in Naples in 1777, was one of the most important landscape artists and set designers of the eighteenth century. From the 1830s, he began working for various Italian and European courts, in fact, he created ephemeral and sumptuous displays for noble parties and, at the same time, he strengthened his training as a landscape artist by coming to Venice in contact with Canaletto and Bellotto. From 1744 to 1749, he was in England as a set designer for the prestigious King's Theatre. He was the first landscape painter at the service of scholars and antiquarians. Joli was one of the first to depict the excavations of Paestum as he followed Lord Brudenell Montagu in one of the archaeological expeditions. In these views he represents himself drawing the works from life, adopting a dry and precise style, aimed at emphasizing the details requested by the scholars. His works are preserved in renowned museums, such as the Royal Palace of Caserta and the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, the National Gallery of Art in London and in prestigious private collections, especially in England. Antonio Joli died in Naples in 1777.
