Max Klinger was born in Leipzig on 18 February 1857. He studied in Karlsruhe, appreciating the etchings of Menzel and Goya, soon becoming a skilled printmaker himself. He began making sculptures in the early 1880s and from 1883 to 1893 he lived in Rome, where he was most influenced by the Italian Renaissance and antiquity. Klinger traveled for many years to the artistic centers of Europe, before returning to Leipzig in 1893. From 1897 he concentrated mainly on sculpture and his majestic marble statue of Beethoven was even exhibited at the Vienna Secession exhibition in 1902. Many artists of the time cite it as one of the most important links between the Symbolist movement of the 19th century and the beginning of the Surrealist movements of the 20th century.
Max Klinger died on 4 July 1920 at his country house with vineyard, located in Naumburg, which he had purchased in 1903.
