The engraving depicts the third versione of the Isle of the Dead, which Arnold Böcklin painted in 1883 and which was sold by the Berlin merchant Fritz Gurlitt (who also chose the now famous title) in 1884 to Tina Schoen-Renz. It was Gurlitt himself who commissioned Max Klinger to engrave this version of the painting for advertising purposes, a task that Klinger carried out with great skill and dedication, considering his admiration for Böcklin, thus creating one of the most famous and iconic etchings of his oeuvre
