Jerzy Kojawski Biography

Jerzy Kujawski (1921 - 1998), was a Polish painter and graphic designer. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, after the war he moved to Paris and came into contact with the Parisian avant-garde. Thanks to his acquaintance with André Breton he participated in the International Exhibition of Surrealism at the Maeght Gallery in Paris in 1947. He is a very important figure in the history of the Polish avant-garde precisely because his art constituted an important bridge between the West and Poland. He became a member of the Phases group led by Edouard Jaguer and his first solo exhibition took place in Warsaw, in 1957 at the "Krzywe Koło" Gallery.
His art faces various stylistic phases: in the second half of the 40s his work is dominated by surrealism while in the 50s, he turns to abstract art, creating dynamic compositions inspired by the trend of action painting, placing the emphasis about the free arrangement of colors and shapes and unbridled expression. He then approached informal painting, which reached full prominence in the years 1953-1957.
In his art there are many references to physics and cosmology, to the world of nature and biology, as well as to logical and mathematical theories. In the mid-1960s he would abandon abstraction and refer again to surrealist imagery, this time transformed into the context of the modern world.
His works are exhibited at the Center Pompidou in Paris, in contemporary art museums in Paris, Lodz, Darmstadt and in private collections.
