Jean Baptiste Lallemand Biography

Born in 1716 in Dijon, Jean Baptiste Lallemand moved in 1739 to Paris, where he presumably studied under the guidance of Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni. In 1745 he became a member of the Academy of Saint Luke in Paris and two years later he settled for fourteen years in the city of Rome, where he met illustrious figures such as Etienne Parrocel, Claude-Joseph Vernet and Jean Barbault. In 1755 he became friends with the Englishman Robert Adam and created some frescoes in Palazzo Corsini alla Lungara, which were later lost. In 1758 he painted the famous "Finding of Moses" for the papal rooms of the Quirinale, currently exhibited in the Vatican Pinacoteca, and created some views which can still be found today in Villa Lante in Bagnaia.
In 1761 he returned to France and spent several months in Lyon before settling permanently in Paris the following year. In 1764, he exhibited numerous views of Rome and Naples, achieving enormous public success. Between 1770 and 1773 he returned to his hometown of Dijon, where he served as judge of the local Drawing School. During this period he also dedicated himself to the edition of the "Voyage picturesque de la France" (1781-1796), for which he created as many as one hundred and forty views.
In the last years of his life, he concentrated mainly on creating small-format genre paintings and died in Paris in 1803.
