Paolo Leonardo Biography
Paolo Leonardo was born in Turin in 1973, where he attended the Art School and the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in the city which is also the main subject of his works. Since the beginning of the nineties, Leonardo has dedicated himself to the exploration of the advertising image, its reproducibility, the codes that govern it and the meanings it suggests.
His challenge was to overturn these meanings, reinventing advertising images through mainly pictorial interventions. In particular, the posters posted in the street were the main objective of his artistic research, which led the artist to work not only in Turin, but also in Milan, Nice, Brussels and Paris.
The intent of his urban interventions was to put the representation of man and the body back at the centre, using advertising images as starting material for a reflection on contemporary society, with its stereotypes, its miseries and its voids. This reflection also expands on his pictorial work, which represents continuous research on the interaction between painting and photography, in the constant search for overturning the codes of the contemporary media system.
