Cosimo Lerose Biography

Cosimo Lerose was born in Montalbano Jonico, in the province of Matera, in 1939. After completing his military service in Verona, he moved to the city and began working in 1961. Later, he obtained a teaching position in Drawing. The artist is known for his research and experimental painting, which uses an informal technique of kinetic memory. Each of his works is characterized by multiple levels of reading, in which the image is decomposed and recomposed and requires careful analysis.
Lerose's painting is a writing of signs in which the distortion signals a trace without ever reaching the event. The order of his features is seamless and recalls geometry and fantasy. Through his signs, the artist narrates the ancient story of chaos that seeks form and refers us to the mystery of the cosmos.
Lerose also compares himself with other cultures, taking an interest in semiotics and communication. For him, signs can become a means of exchanging messages between different societies and cultures. In drawing, his style favors the outline of shapes and the interweaving of lines graphically obtained for plastic effects.
Lerose's research is characterized by continuous rigor and investigation into the variation and elementary combination of lines. The signs are not chosen for their meaning, but for the shapes and movement they produce on the surface. Finally, their surface interweaving leads to precise and rigorous visual models. Lerose dies in 2020.
