Charlene Liu Biography
Charlene Liu was born in 1975 in Taiwan, where she spent her early life. In 2003, Liu received his Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University, United States. He has exhibited his work in numerous solo exhibitions, including those at Shaheen Modern and Contemporary Art in Cleveland in 2008, Taylor De Cordoba in Los Angeles in 2007, Virgil de Voldère in New York in 2006 and Andrea Rosen Gallery also in New York in 2003.
Liu is drawn to unusual viewpoints, focusing on the fantastical and almost psychedelic images of flowers and fauna. Most of his work focuses on the beauty of the ephemeral and imperfect, highlighting the feeling of danger and melancholy in his landscapes. Liu's works on paper feature a profusion of plants and fruits, which come together in an unusual and amorphous way, creating an effect of abstraction and fading.
Liu uses a variety of mediums and techniques to create his unique vision of the natural environment, including watercolors, ink, acrylic painting, woodcuts, and silkscreen. In addition to the repetition and proliferation of a single motif, Liu also incorporates collage and other elements to create compositions that reflect complex multivalent emotional states. His art is a reflection of the beauty of the impermanent and incomplete form of things, where transience and intentionality are found in moments of beginning or failure, before flowering or after decline.
