Maximilien Luce was born on 13 March 1858 in Paris and, at 14, began his apprenticeship with the wood engraver Henri-Théophile Hildebrand. Luce earned a reputation as a French neo-impressionist artist, celebrated for his skill in painting, illustrating and engraving. After spending a period of time in the circle of the Impressionists, Luce became close to the pointillist style of Georges Seurat. Although best known for his landscape works, Luce also engaged in the depiction of political themes, developing a deep empathy towards the proletariat. The artist died on February 7, 1941 in Paris, France.
