Cesare Maccari Biography

Cesare Maccari, born in Siena on 9 May 1840, became passionate about sculpture from a young age, attending the Institute of Fine Arts in Siena at just fifteen years old. In 1856 he began working in the studio of the Sienese Tito Sarrocchi and in 1866 he won a scholarship, which allowed him to study the Renaissance masters in Florence and the art of frescoes in Perugia. Starting in 1872, he dedicated himself to painting easel works, specializing in exotic, sentimental and ancient Roman subjects. In 1881-88 he won the competition for the decoration of the Yellow Hall of Palazzo Madama in Rome and in 1888 he obtained the commission for the fresco decoration of the dome and tambour of the Basilica of Loreto. Subsequently, he dedicated himself to the frescoes on the ceiling and walls of the Aula Magna of the Palace of Justice in Rome, which represent allegories and themes relating to justice and the history of law. In 1909 Maccari was struck by paralysis and forced into inactivity; he died in Rome on 7 April 1919.
