Manifattura Di Lenci Biography

In 1919, Helen Konig and her husband Enrico Scavini founded a small artisan factory of wooden toys and doll furniture in Turin. After a few months of activity they put into production a series of felt dolls which soon achieved great commercial success, thus the company "Lenci", an acronym derived from the diminutive of Helen and the acronym of "Ludus et nobis constanter industria". In 1925, the "Lenci" won numerous prizes at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris. In 1928, the company began producing ceramics which achieved great success by exhibiting them in Turin and London. They used high-quality materials and involved twenty great artists for decoration. The ceramic was obtained from a mixture of national kaolins with the addition of Dutch earth, firing in a kiln at a thousand degrees and the use of halftones rich in transparencies, allowing production of the highest quality level to be achieved. In the 1950s, new models of great artistic quality were introduced thanks to the contribution of Mario Sturani, the artistic director. The company's production finally ceased in 1964.
