Pompeo Marchesi was born in Saltrio on August 7, 1783. His father, Carlo Gerolamo, was a marble worker at the Duomo di Milano, and his mother was named Cattarina Tamborini. From a young age, Pompeo followed his father to Milan and studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts with the sculptor Giuseppe Franchi. In 1804, he traveled to Rome to attend a scholarship granted to him by the Braidense institution of the Napoleonic government and attended sculpture courses at the Roman Academy, then directed by Antonio Canova.
