Andrea Marchisio Biography
Andrea Marchisio was born in Turin on 15 May 1850 and died there on 23 July 1927. In 1864, he began to attend the Accademia Albertina in Turin and exhibited his first genre painting "A Soap Bubble" at the annual exhibition of the Promoter of Turin . After this first exhibition, he continued to exhibit his works almost exclusively at the Turin Promoter until the end of the century.
Currently, the reconstruction of the catalog of Marchisio's work is rather complicated as many of his paintings, purchased from private individuals and galleries of the time, are dispersed and preserved in private, non-public collections. From the little that has been possible to reconstruct, it would seem that in his first production Marchisio had a particular predilection for genre themes, very popular in Piedmont at the time. He later concentrated mainly on historical and literary subjects, painted with technical ingenuity and a palette of great skill. In 1886 he was appointed assistant master of painting at the Albertina Academy, a role which he maintained throughout his life and which engaged him deeply.
During his academic years, Marchisio alternated small-format works, depicting costume scenes painted with great skill, with larger paintings on historical and literary subjects.
Finally, Marchisio died in Turin on 23 July 1927.
