Jacopo Marieschi Biography

Jacopo Marieschi was born on 12 February 1711 in Venice. There are certain ways in which Marieschi was introduced to the world of painting but became a pupil and collaborator of the Belluno painter Gaspare Diziani, so much so that experts were confused between the works of Marieschi and those of the master. During his lifetime, he enjoyed great respect to the point of becoming president of the Academy of Painting in 1776. However, at the beginning of his career, it seems that he stood out mainly for his ability to imitate Sebastiano's pictorial style Ricci and his followers. Among Marieschi's most important works there are two series of canvases famous for their narrative vein: the four Episodes of History at the Episcopal Curia of Vittorio Veneto and the Stories of S. Romualdo, currently in storage at the Special Superintendency for the Polo Venetian Museum, which were created for the church of S. Clemente in Isola between 1745 and 1748. In the following years, Marieschi also participated in the renovation of the ground atrium of the Scuola della Carità with three ceilings: the Theological Virtues, the Crowned Madonna in Heaven and the Divine Wisdom and Theological Virtues. These works are now exhibited at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Marieschi died in Venice in 1794.
