Carlo Massoud Biography
Carlo Massoud was born in Beirut in 1984 and studied at the Académie Libanaise Des Beaux Arts (ALBA), obtaining a degree in industrial design in 2008. In the same year, he collaborated on various projects by the Lebanese designer Karen Chekerdijian. In 2010 he moved to Switzerland to study at the École cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL), obtaining a degree in craftsmanship. During this period he had the opportunity to work with renowned international designers, such as Ronan Bouroullec, Barber Osgerby, Pierre Charpin and Umberto and Fernando Campana.
From 2011 to 2013, Massoud worked for architect Nasser Nakib in New York, specializing in luxury residential projects. After returning to Beirut in 2013, he opened his own studio. Carlo Massoud's work is based on the incessant questioning of social, political, cultural and environmental norms. It often pushes viewers to question their knowledge on the topic, leading them to a confusing and provocative experience that stimulates critical thinking.
“I find myself constantly searching for new spaces, ideas, cultures and destinations and actively document, research and gather information from different sources.” The discovery of new and unknown places represents the key to his creations. Through them, he finds new stories to tell and share, collaborating with local artisans and designers to create a global narrative that arises from a unique blend of people, cultures and materials.
"Collaboration with local visionaries allows me to discover new production techniques, using basic materials and cutting-edge technologies. Our joint effort gives rise to an exchange of cultures, knowledge and possibilities." After graduating from ECAL in Switzerland, he began his working career at the Nasser Nakib architecture firm in New York City, where he focused on high-end residential projects, creating custom furniture and architectural details.
Since 2013, he began working under his own name, participating in international trade fairs, including Armory Show (NYC), Southern Guild (Cape Town) and Design Days (Dubai), among others.
