Teodoro Matteini Biography
Teodoro Matteini was born in Pistoia on 10 May 1754. Son of Ippolito Matteini, a well-known decorative painter of the 18th century, he grew up in an artistic environment from an early age, Teodoro moved to Rome, where he worked as an assistant to Domenico Corvi and collaborated with Anton Raphael Mengs.
Subsequently, Matteini embarked on his own artistic career and created many works in Rome, Bergamo, Milan and Venice. In the latter city, he was also a painting teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts and restored a vast collection of stucco and terracotta models collected by Abbot Filippo Farsetti.
His style, predominantly neoclassical, concentrated above all on historical and religious subjects, although he also dedicated himself to the creation of portraits. Among his numerous students, we remember Giovanni Andrea Darif, Bartolomeo Ferracina, Odorico Politi, Giovanni Busato, Sebastiano Santi, Francesco Hayez and Ludovico Lipparini.
Teodoro Matteini died in Venice on 16 November 1831, but his artistic legacy continued through his daughter Anna Matteini, who also distinguished herself as a landscape painter.
