Giuseppe Mazza Biography

Giuseppe Mazza (1817 - 1884) studied at the Brera Academy under the guidance of Sabatelli and Hayez. He traveled to various Italian cities to further his education and presented two patriotic canvases at the Brera Academy, entitled "The Milanese, aided by the knights of the Lombard League, return to their city destroyed by Federico Barbarossa" (1846) and "The widows of Ottone and Lanfranco da Carcano present to Archbishop Giordano the remains of their husbands killed by the Como people" (1847), both in the romantic and academic style of Hayez. In 1848, together with his brother Carlo, he participated in the anti-Habsburg struggle in the Five Days of Milan and painted "The Oath of Pontida" inspired by the verses of Giovanni Berchet. He continued to paint patriotic canvases such as "The bivouac in the Crimea" (1855) and "The clash between Zouaves at the castle of Melegnano" (1859). In the second period of the nineteenth century, he painted many portraits and works representing important Italian characters and events. He participated in the Milanese debate to renew Italian painting with subjects closer to popular sensibility, creating a genre painting that narrated news events and daily life such as "The suppression of the monastery" (1866), "The antique dealer's shop" ( 1878) and "A cellar player" (1882).
