Ryan Mcginness Biography
Ryan Joseph McGinness is an American artist, born January 9, 1972, living and working in Manhattan, New York. Known for his original vast vocabulary of graphic designs that utilize the visual language of public signs, corporate logos, and contemporary iconography, McGinness creates paintings, sculptures, and environments through these iconographic elements.
McGinness grew up immersed in the vibrant youth culture of Virginia Beach, where skateboarding and surfing were popular. These youthful experiences and his early education are clearly visible in much of his work. He then studied graphic design and fine arts at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During college, he interned at the Andy Warhol Museum as an assistant curator.
His work is featured in the permanent public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Cincinnati Art Museum, MUSAC in Spain, and the Misumi Collection in Japan.
