Gerold Miller Biography

Gerold Miller was born in Altshausen, Germany in 1961.
After studying sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart Jürgen Brodwolf moved to the United States in and in 1994 received a scholarship from the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. In 1998, he spent a period in the Miedzynarodwe Sztuki residency in Poznań (Poland), and in 1999 he was artist in residence at Artspace Sydney. In 2001, he received the Lake Constance International Culture Award. Lives and works in Berlin.
Since his debut in 1991, his work has consisted of the creation of frame-objects.
Miller successfully transforms something that has become obsolete and irrelevant in contemporary art - the frame - into the main subject of his art. His method is conceptual, analytical and rational. His first works are open metal constructions, extremely similar to frames, with protruding sections, which communicate a sense of incompleteness.
By reducing its structures more and more, it comes to favor color over form.
His installations, called "Anlagen", are constructed of aluminum and industrial lacquer or enamel, and do not define an image but rather a boundary between sculpture and painting, between internal and external space.
