Jean Miotte was born in Paris in 1926.
Miotte is part of the Art Informel movement and his working style is compared to that of jazz musicians or classical dancers who use free movements within a structured practice
The artist studied under the guidance of Othon Friesz and Ossip Zadkine in the Montparnasse district of Paris. At the beginning of the 1950s he dedicated himself to abstraction. After being in New York in 1961, he met modern painters such as Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell, whose works would have a great influence on his painting. In the 50s and 60s, Jean Miotte worked on a painting made of juxtaposition of touches of colored paint, very dynamic and in relief. In the 70s and 80s his painting was influenced by Japanese Zen art.
Miotte has had an international career between Freiburg in Switzerland, where he opened a museum, Germany (Hamburg) and New York, where he opened a Miotte Foundation (part of the Chelsea Museum). His works are preserved in large private and public collections, such as those of the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, the National Museum in Singapore, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Dunkirk and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, among others. Miotte lived between Paris, New York and Fribourg, Switzerland. He died on March 1, 2016 in New York.
