Nanna Ditzel Biography
Ditzel Nanna was a Danish designer born in Copenhagen in 1923. After studying as a cabinetmaker, she attended the School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in furniture design in 1946. It was at that time that he founded his own design studio together with Jørgen Ditzel, with whom he collaborated for much of his career.
Ditzel Nanna has worked in many disciplines, including cabinetmaking, jewelry, tableware, applied art, and textiles, and has experimented with various materials such as fiberglass, wicker, and foam. During the 1950s he developed an interest in creating split-level seating.
After living in London from 1968-86, where he founded the international furniture house Interspace in Hampstead with Kurt Heide, Ditzel Nanna continued to work as a designer until his death in Copenhagen in June 2005. Working with brands such as Georg Jensen , Kvadrat, Fredericia, Kvist and Getama, has designed jewellery, textiles and furniture which have been exhibited in international exhibitions in cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin, New York, Vienna, London, Stockholm, Milan, Glasgow, Manchester, Reykjavik and Paris.
For his works, Ditzel Nanna has received numerous international awards, including the gold medal at the International Furniture Design Competition in Japan in 1990, for his Bench for Two (Fredericia). In 1996, she was elected Honorable Royal Designer by the Royal Society of Arts in London, while in 1998 she received the Lifetime Artist Fellowship from the Danish Ministry of Culture.
