Gekko Ogata, whose real name was Masanosuke Nagami, was born in Edo on September 5, 1859. Without having received formal artistic training, Gekko began his artistic activity as an illustrator of newspapers and books, and then broadened his interests to painting, lacquer and ceramic. In 1884, as he began to gain popularity as a print artist, he adopted the stage name Gekko, which he is said to have taken in honor of the famous artist Korin Ogata, at the request of his family. Over the course of his career, Ogata became a Member of the Meiji Fine Art Society and helped found the Japan Youth Painting Association with Kakuzo Okakura in 1891. In 1904, he received a gold medal at the St. Louis World's Fair for selections from "One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji" art print series. Gekko Ogata perfected his style, fusing ukiyo-e print, nihonga, Shijo-style painting and Chinese painting. Due to his artistic background, his works have an appearance more similar to a painting than a traditional print. Gekko Ogata died on October 1, 1920 in Ushigome.
