Ermanno Olmi Biography
Ermanno Olmi was born in Treviglio, in the province of Bergamo, in 1931 into a Catholic peasant family. His mother worked at Ediso nvolta and Olmi himself joined the company as an organizer of recreational activities, especially for the cinema service. Olmi directed dozens of documentaries between 1953 and 1961, including "The Glacier Dam," "Three Wires to Milan" and "One Meter is Five Long." In 1958, he made his directorial debut with "Time Stopped". In 1961, he directed "Il posto" which won the OCIC award and the critics' award at the Venice Film Festival. After a series of not entirely successful works, he had a successful comeback with "The Tree of Clogs", which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1977. In 1982, he founded the film school " Cinema Hypothesis" in Bassano del Grappa. His other works include "Walking Walks", "The Craft of Arms", "Singing Behind the Screens", "Tickets" and "Giuseppe Verdi - Un Ballo in Maschera". His last film, "Centochiodi", was released in 2007. After retiring from cinema, he continued to work on documentaries until his death in Asiago, aged 86, on 7 May 2018.
