Petros Papavassiliou (1928 - ), Greek artist and figure of contemporary art, was the youngest of the abstract surrealists in the stable of Alexander Iolas, an internationally renowned art dealer called "The King of Surrealism" for having discovered and launched the greatest masters of surrealism, including Salvator Dal, De Chirico, Lam, Magritte, Matta, Max Ernst, Petros, Victor Brauner and Andy Warhol.
Born in 1928 in Athens, he was a professor of engraving at the Athens Polytechnic, where he won four prizes in woodcut and intaglio. After completing his studies in engraving techniques in Perugia and Urbino in 1958, he decided to stay in Italy, getting married and settling permanently in Lombardy: inspired by the beauty of Lake Como and the technological evolution of printing systems, he founded a specialized printing house for books and catalogs of art and worked in the painting ateliers of Milan and Ossuccio (Tremezzina), holding personal exhibitions all over the world and receiving numerous awards.
His cycles of works in honor of Greek poets (Sappho, Elytis, Ritsos), pre-Socratic philosophers, as well as the master De Chirico are famous.
Over the last twenty years, anthological exhibitions have been dedicated to Petros all over the world and some of his works are permanently present in museum spaces and modern art galleries.
