Paolo Pellion Di Persano Biography
Paolo Pellion di Persano was an Italian photographer born in Castagneto in 1947. He began taking his first professional photographs in the early 1970s, closely following the work of Arte Povera and Conceptual artists, documenting their work. In the works of Conceptual and Arte Povera artists, creativity is rooted in a mental process, and photography captures the atmosphere of the artwork and is often a tool for its creation.
Since 1975, for more than a decade, Pellion di Persano has collaborated with director Carlo Quartucci, known for using sets created by contemporary artists such as Paolini, Kounellis, Weiner, Kirkeby, Buren, Merz, Fabro, Cucchi and Nitsch. In 1985 he created the images for the "Ouverture" catalogue, the first exhibition at the Castello di Rivoli, and since then he has documented the museum's activity until 2012. In the field of art he collaborates with many artists, the Rivetti Foundation, the Sandretto Foundation and Turin tourism.
In the last years of his life, Pellion di Persano almost abandoned his operational activity to dedicate himself to reorganizing his rich archive and producing some photographic prints of his most significant shots. Alongside his work in the art world, he has also worked in other sectors such as publishing, industry and has created photographs for well-known fashion brands.
The photographer died in 2017.
