Luciano Pera Biography

Luciano Pera was born in Badia di Cantignano in 1925 and began painting and sculpting as a boy, initially influenced by the surrealist movement. In 1945 he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Pisa and at the same time attended courses at the Art Academies of Florence and Paris, the city where he arrived for the first time in 1947 and to which he remained linked throughout his life. During his stay in Paris, Pera deepened not only his relationship with art, but also with ethnological studies within the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the Sorbonne and the Museum of Man, feeling the influence of Claude's structuralism Lévi-Strauss. In Paris he completed his artistic training in the 1950s, where he met and interacted with some of the greatest artists of the time, such as Chagall, Cesar and Arman.
Although his artistic activity reached other European countries, Pera worked mainly in Italy and France, where he held numerous exhibitions. Pera's art is undoubtedly original, imaginative and difficult to classify. It is difficult to find a complete and stabilized artistic style that defines his peculiar artistic imprint and morphology, as he fully belongs to the heterogeneous group of experimental artists, and even more so, in his case, to those who live in a perpetual "disquiet of forms». sober and imaginative expressed in primitive graphics.
Pera is one of those ever-changing artists who projects himself into a world of primordial intuitions and archetypes that continually fuel his creativity. His personality is immediately revealed and recognized for its incredibly original sense of symbiosis between man and nature and for his continuous search to represent it in various symbolic forms, in which the abstraction of the idea translates into plastic concreteness. For this reason, Pera's artistic production appears permeated by this relationship, tending to represent, through the forms of the arts most congenial to him, such as graphics and sculpture, the intuitions developed by the natural sciences and the human psyche. The artist reworks these meanings by transposing structural references of a biological, anthropological, archaic and primitive nature into painting, graphics and sculpture.
Luciano Pera's creative act is placed in a space-time dimension at the center of a complex cosmogonic entity, from which he seems to capture indefinite memories, anthropomorphic presences and historical stratifications that are transformed into an instinctual and visionary creative impulse.
