Palmiro Polacci Biography
Palmiro Polacci was born in Pietrasanta in 1941. Graduated in Applied Art at the "Stagio Stagi" Art Institute of Pietrasanta in 1960, he refined his skills in goldsmithing by collaborating with a jeweler in Rome, where he also attended drawing courses at Academy of Fine Arts. In 1961 he was hired by the Tommasi Foundry of Pietrasanta as a modeler and engraver and in 1962 he began to collaborate with the "Casa Giardino" Art Center in Massa, where he experimented with new theatrical forms and organized avant-garde exhibitions.
In 1968-69 he created sculptures for the sets of some films, including "L'Assoluto Naturale" by Mauro Bolognini, and in 1971 he stayed in New York, where he exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery with Joseph Kosuth. Since then, he has focused on conceptual art. Returning to Pietrasanta, he teaches at the "Stagio Stagi" Art Institute. In 1972 he was invited with a group of Italian teachers to East Germany by the Ministry of Education, and subsequently, with two architects and a technician, he founded the Versilia 4 Group in Pietrasanta for the design of serial objects for the company "Forma and Surface" of Turin.
From 1974 to 1981 he dedicated himself mainly to performances. Since 1985 he has studied psychology at the University of Padua. He presented his first solo exhibition in 1969 at the Giraldi Gallery in Livorno (and then again in '67 and '71 in Florence), and then at: Galleria Diagramma, Milan (1970; '73; '76); "Action", La Spezia (1970); Lara Vincy Gallery, Paris (1976); Unimedia Gallery, Genoa (1977); "International Entertainment Week", Gallery of Modern Art, Bologna (1977); Multipurpose Hall, Civic Gallery, Ferrara (1981). Among his main participations in collective exhibitions are: "Biennale", Gubbio (1967); San Giorgio Gallery, Portofino (1969); "Returned to the sender", Galleria Schema, Florence (1974); Lara Vincy Gallery, Paris (1977; '79); Studio D'Ars, Milan (1978); Dehonian Gallery, Naples (1981); Museum of Conceptual Art, Ottawa, Canada (1981); Georges Pompidou Cultural Center, Paris (1982).
