Giorgio Poliktratys Biography
Giorgio Polykratis was born in 1931 in Apiranthos on the island of Naxos. He studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts with master Michalis Tombros. He graduated in 1960 and in 1962 he settled in Florence where he lives and works. From 1962 to today he has held 49 personal exhibitions in Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Greece and has participated in national and international exhibitions with painting and sculpture, obtaining prizes and recognition. In 1964 at his first solo exhibition in Florence he exhibited a series of 17 bronze and stone sculptures and 30 paintings and in 1971 he was invited to the XX International Biennale of Florence at Palazzo Strozzi. In 1989 he won the prize in the painting competition, promoted with the "National Confederation of Crafts" and by the municipality of Prato. This prize consisted in the creation of a personal exhibition at the expense of the Municipality at the "Palazzo Pretorio", then held in 1991, entitled "Kyklos". In 1992 in Fabriano, at the "International Fresco Workshop", he was chosen to create the seven meter by three and a half meter fresco in the atrium of the city's railway station. In 2000 the Municipality of Athens dedicated a painting exhibition entitled "Morphs and Metamorphoses" to the Greek diaspora artist Giorgio Polykratis. Authoritative art critics have dealt with his work, extolling the virtues of his iconic personality. Many of them have noticed that in his morphoplastic discourse Giorgio Polykratis attempts his refusal towards the psychic demolition of our era. His works can be found in the Modigliani Museum, in the municipalities of Florence, Fabriano, Athens, Drymalias in Naxos, in art galleries and private collections in Europe.
