Giuseppe Detto Salviati Porta Biography
Giuseppe Porta, known by the nickname "Salviati" or "Salviatino", was born in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana in 1520. His apprenticeship took place in the workshop of the renowned Francesco Salviati and, in honor of his mentor, he decided to adopt the name of "Salviati" art. Already in 1535, the young artist moved to Rome with his master, coming to specialize in the external decoration of prestigious buildings. During this period, he had the opportunity to closely study the works of great masters such as Raphael and Michelangelo.
After leaving the capital in the early 1540s, Porta moved first to Florence, then to Bologna and finally, in July 1540, to Venice. It was in the latter city that he had the opportunity to dedicate himself more consistently to the decoration of buildings. Here he collaborated on the creation of the splendid Library Hall of the Marciana Library, working alongside two other great painters of the time, Veronese and Tintoretto.
1566 marked Giuseppe Porta's entry into the Accademia del Disegno in Florence. Salviati continued to work successfully as a painter and decorator until he died in Venice in 1575.
