Ugo Pozzo Biography

Ugo Pozzo was born in Turin in 1900. He began exhibiting his first futurist paintings with Tullio Alpinolo Bracci and Luigi Colombo from 1919 to 1921 in almost clandestine exhibitions held in suburban basements, clubs and ballrooms. In 1922 he exhibited his paintings at the first National Caricature Exhibition at the Garden Club of Turin together with other artists of great reputation. On 5 March 1923 he founded the Futurist Group of Turin with Fillia and Bracci and actively participated in the most important futurist art exhibitions of the time, both Italian and international. In 1927, Pozzo and his Futurist friends conquered a room at the Quadrennial of the Promotrice of Turin, where the largest and most complete Futurist Art Exhibition of the time was held, a prelude to subsequent participation in the Venice Biennale. In addition to painting, he has also worked in sculpture, caricature, advertising and editorial graphics, furniture, animated cinema and the design and production of wooden toys. Between 1931 and 1932 he stayed and worked in Paris as a designer and cartoonist at Edizioni Montparnasse and some newspapers. After the Second World War, he continued to develop his pictorial research through pioneering informal experiments and the recovery and reinterpretation of the personal style that had characterized his futurist works. Starting from the 1960s he resumed his exhibition activity in various Italian cities until his death in Turin in 1981. Despite his talent and constant activity, his memory has been tarnished due to his shy and modest character , the limited circulation of the works in the post-war period and some incomprehensible "forgetfulness" on the part of critics.
