Domenico Rambelli Biography

Domenico Rambelli (Pieve Ponte, Faenza 1886- Rome 1972) The artist completed his training first at the School of Arts and Crafts in Pieve Ponte, then continued at the Free School of the Nude of the Academy of Fine Arts. His career has began in Rome in 1905 when he exhibited the painting "Sick Man" for the "Società Amatori e Cultori di Belle Arti" exhibition. In 1908 he participated in the Venice Biennale with the portrait of his master, the painter Antonio Berti. During his stay in Paris he came into contact with Bourdelle and Picasso, he also became aware of the influence of Rodin. Returning to Faenza, after having participated in the Great War, he obtained the chair of plastic and ornamental painting at the Institute of Art for Ceramics. 1920 is the year from which the planning of the monument to the Fallen of Viareggio began, which was only built in 1927. In 1922 he again participated in the Venice Biennale and the Florentine Spring. In 1926 the Mostra del Novecento Italiano held in Milan saw him among the protagonists. In 1928 he created the monument to the Fallen of Brisghella; in 1931 his work "Sleeping Infantryman" was exhibited at the Rome Quadrennial, while in 1932 for the tenth anniversary of the Exhibition of the Fascist Revolution he created "Singing Infantryman" together with three other large mural sculptures. In 1936 he began his work for the creation of the monument to Francesco Baracca for the square of Lugo di Romagna (RA) and in 1939 an entire room was dedicated to him by the III Roman Quadrennial which also awarded him the 1st National Prize for Sculpture . In Rome he obtained the professorship of Nude at the Academy of Fine Arts, he took care of the decoration of the Chapel of San Francesco in the Basilica of Sant'Eugenio; he also created the sketch for the monument dedicated to Alfredo Oriani for Faenza and the tomb of the musician Francesco Balilla Pratella for Lugo di Romagna. After being appointed Academician of San Luca in 1960, he died in Rome in 1970.
