Alessandro Russo Biography
Alessandro Russo is an artist born in Catanzaro in 1953 who has affirmed his artistic originality in the European figurative panorama. His artistic career began in the 70s with the first exhibitions in private galleries in which his personal invention of an autonomous and refined visionary world emerged. In his works, ironic and caricatural characters appear that create a timeless universe, surrounded by a poetry full of existential and social meanings. His personal style masterfully reworks the techniques of 18th and 20th century European painting, attracting the attention of critics.
The 80s saw Russo engaged in teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catanzaro where he became Professor of Decoration. The artist takes root in his land, participating in important decoration projects for public spaces such as the Pinacoteca di Taverna, the Palazzo De Nobili headquarters of the Municipality of Catanzaro, the Palazzo Pubblico of Corato, the Provincial Palace of the Guardia di Finanza in Vibo Valentia and the Calabrian Fire Brigade Centre.
In the 90s his activity also expanded outside Italy, with exhibitions in Hungary, Malta and the prestigious homage from the French Institute of Florence. In 2005 he participated in the first exhibition of the MAC, Museum of Contemporary Art of the Academy of Catanzaro, while starting from 2008 he intensified his exhibition activity in various Italian cities until his participation in the Italian Pavilion of the 2011 Venice Biennale.
Recently, the artist has dedicated himself to landscape, exhibiting in several Italian galleries. In 2017, he was invited to exhibit during the "Panorama d'Italia" tour in Milan, with a solo exhibition set up at Palazzo Durini. Russo continues to experiment and innovate in his art, so much so that he was recently invited to exhibit some works in China that portray the transformation of some global megacities.
Currently, Russo is a teacher of Decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan "Brera".
