Lucio Saffaro Biography
Lucio Saffaro, born on 26 July 1929 in Trieste and died on 28 November 1998 in Bologna, was an important Italian writer and painter. Having graduated in physics at the University of Bologna, Saffaro combined his passion for mathematics with his artistic activity, studying solids and in particular the icosahedra present in nature, which he represented in his paintings.
By publishing several articles on the tessellations of the plane, on the classes of icosahedrons and on the aspects of mathematical infinity, Saffaro carried out research on the new polyhedra which he presented in numerous works and conferences held in Italy and abroad. While some of his works had been published in the Mondadori Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, many of his works were not subjected to systematic evaluation by the scientific community.
Furthermore, Saffaro published many books of poetry which had considerable success, including some works translated in Germany and France. He has been exhibiting his paintings since 1962, starting from the Galleria dell'Obelisco in Rome, up to the Venice Biennale and many other exhibitions in Italy and abroad, receiving numerous awards. His works have been exhibited in anthological exhibitions also in important museums such as the Civic Museum of Castelvecchio in Verona, the Gallery of Modern Art in Bologna and the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa.
Following his death, his works were exhibited at the Museum System of the University of Bologna in 2004.
