Girolamo Savoldo Biography

Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo was an Italian painter of Brescian origins, born around 1480. Despite the period spent in the Serenissima, Savoldo was always inspired by the naturalist tradition of Lombard painting and is considered one of the three great masters of the first Brescian Renaissance, together with Romanino and Moretto.
One of the distinctive features of Savoldo's art are the so-called "nocturnes", that is, nocturnal scenes in which a light source inside the painting illuminates the characters and objects represented. This technique probably influenced the young Caravaggio and was a source of inspiration for him.
As regards his activity in Venice, Savoldo moved there around 1520 and signed the famous panel with "The hermit saints Anthony and Paul", now preserved in the Gallerie dell'Accademia. The following year he completed “The Madonna and Saints” for the church of San Niccolò in Treviso, inserting an image of the musician angel at the foot of the throne. Although he painted little for lagoon clients, Savoldo still remained part of the local figurative culture.
His pictorial style has always remained close to the naturalistic and Nordic trend that characterizes "Brescian" painting, however accepting the "contemplative suggestion" of Giorgione. Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo dies after 1548.
