Silvestr Schedrin Biography

Sylvester Feodosiyevich Shchedrin (1791 - 1830) was a Russian landscape painter.
Sylvester Shchedrin was born in St. Petersburg into the family of the famous sculptor Feodosiy Shchedrin, rector of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. Sylvester's uncle, Semion Shchedrin, was a landscape painter. In 1800, Sylvester Shchedrin enters the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1811 he graduated with several awards including the Great Gold Medal for his painting "View from Petrovsky Island".
Sylvester moved to Italy in 1818, where he studied classical art in Rome and painted watercolors in Naples ordered by Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich of Russia. His greatest success of that period was "New Rome. Castel Sant'Angelo" (1823). Next, he paints 8-10 variations of the painting, each from a slightly different angle and with different details.
In 1825 he completed his work "Lago di Albano", which represents a new step towards a more natural composition. In this painting, he reduced the boundaries between object and background and abandoned the use of formal colors.
One of his favorite motifs were the vine terraces overlooking the sea, defined as images of the "Midday Paradise". He died in Sorrento in 1830.
Shchedrin influenced not only Russian but also Italian art. He was one of the founders of the so-called Posillipo school. Many of his works can be found in Italian museums.
