Secessione Viennese Biography

The Wiener Secession (Viennese Secession) was an Austrian artistic movement born in the context of Art Nouveau. Between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, it developed mainly in Vienna, but also had relevance in Munich and Berlin. A group of nineteen artists and architects proclaimed a secession from the cultural environment of the Academy of Fine Arts by forming their own group, known as the Wiener Secession. The group's headquarters was at the Vienna Secession Building. The "Arts and crafts" exhibition, organized in London in 1888, and the experience of its promoters are considered the sources of inspiration for the Viennese secession. In 1903, the architect Josef Hoffmann, the designer and painter Koloman Moser, together with the banker and art collector Fritz Waerndorfer, founded the Wiener Werkstätte, or Viennese Workshops. This organization was a true creative community that put into practice the results obtained from research in the fields of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, including the Viennese secession. The founders' goal was to renew the production of furniture using the work of artists and designers. Among the most famous productions were the wallpapers designed by Kolo Moser. The official magazine of the Vienna Secession was called Ver Sacrum.
